Risk Management Meets Midwestern Weather: Highlights from the St. Louis Roadshow

Well, you know you are in the Midwest during springtime when the last 10 minutes of a VCIA Roadshow gets interrupted by a Tornado warning.  As the locals explained, “this happens all the time”, while the Vermont contingent looked out the windows nervously before shifting location to an interior space. Fortunately, being that we were in a construction company’s headquarters, we felt overall quite safe and were relieved when the warning was lifted.

Before all that excitement, a group of close to 50 people were taken through a three-part presentation.

Tom Green & Ben Gould

Firstly, Tom Green from Aon and Ben Gould from Paul, Frank + Collins expertly defined the reasons and processes involved in making the decision to manage risk within a captive.  This was then developed by Brittany Nevins, Economic Development Director for Captive Insurance and Dan Pettersen, DFR’s Chief Examiner who took that information and talked about how that process works in a Vermont context.

Finally, the case study portion of the afternoon had Joe Carter and Melinda Young, both VCIA Board members, talk about the unique challenges and opportunities that their entities possess.  Foe Joe, United Educators, is an RRG that covers thousands of educational institutions in 49 US states.  Their complex liability coverage issues made for a fascinating study in how organizations meet evolving challenges.  For Melinda, who hosted us at her Alberici office, her captive was different in structure, focus and coverage, but she found resonance with the audience as she discussed the challenges of coordinating multiple service providers in an environment that built its captive out of a focus on safety for employees and other stakeholders.

As always the conversation was lively at the networking reception that followed, with long-time industry friends reuniting and new acquaintances made. The Alberici facilities were top notch, and the staff was hospitable and gracious. Our sincerest thanks to Melinda for hosting and for our generous sponsors, Aon, TD Wealth and Midwest Employers Casualty for making the Road Show possible.

We are delighted to welcome such a diverse and involved group of participants and are pleased to report that the attendance was greater than the last time we held a roadshow in St. Louis in 2012.
