The success of roadshows put on by the VCIA continues. Last week in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, we were proud to present a three-part symposium on the establishment regulation and exploitation of captives to a diverse audience of risk managers, service providers, faculty and students.
I had the pleasure of being the moderator for the captive owners session which featured Laura Hatton of Burnham holdings and Ben Evans of UPenn. The captives managed by these two exemplary individuals could not be more different. The superlatives around UPenn are truly mind boggling. For example, Ben revealed to us that the university has the 4th largest police force in the state of Pennsylvania! For contrast, Burnham holdings has a couple thousand employees in the business of boiler making. What was great for the audience was to hear that while the risks and frankly the numbers were different, the approach of how professionals integrate a captive or RRG into their overall risk management practice had so many similarities.
To lead off the afternoon session Ben Gould of the law firm Paul Frank and Collins and David Guerino of the captive manager KeyState, let us through a test case from inception to examination of an existing captive providing guidance on how to navigate both relationships and required governance financial and compliance operations.
Also joining us were Dan Petterson and Brittany Nevins, respectively from the Vermont Departments of Financial Regulation and Economic Development. Their review of the breadth and reach of the captive industry globally and in Vermont was illustrative of the dynamic industry in which we operate.
I also had some outstanding conversations at the post event reception with people either already established in Vermont or potentially seeking to locate a captive in the State.
Many thanks to our sponsors for helping us put on a great roadshow. We are already planning 2025 roadshows, and look forwards to bringing this outstanding education to a location near you soon.
