Join us for VCIA's Special Session on Wednesday, to hear from Michael S. Pieciak commissioner of the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation and Hank Watkins, Regional Director & President, Americas, Lloyd's who will discuss the perils associated with ESG issues and their practical application on the captive insurance industry.
We will also celebrate the 2021 VCIA Industry Service and Captive Crusader award winners. These awardees are chosen annually in recognition of VCIA members that have best supported the captive industry and made contributions to the overall vitality and general welfare of the industry and VCIA.

Michael Pieciak

Michael S. Pieciak is commissioner of the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation. He was appointed by Gov. Peter Shumlin in July 2016 and reappointed by Gov. Phil Scot in December 2016. Commissioner Pieciak serves as the chief regulator of Vermont’s financial services sector, including the insurance, captive insurance, banking and securities industries. Commissioner Pieciak previously served as deputy commissioner of the Department’s Securities Division. Prior to his service with the Department, Commissioner Pieciak practiced law in New York City at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group. Commissioner Pieciak also previously practiced at Downs Rachlin Martin in Burlington in the Business Law Group. Commissioner Pieciak is an observer member of the SEC Advisory Committee on Small and Emerging Companies, Chairman of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) Corporate Finance Section Committee and member of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Commissioner Pieciak graduated cum laude from Union College with a degree in political science. He received his law degree summa cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of the “Miami Law Review.” Commissioner Pieciak is also a member of the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees..

Hank Watkins

Hank is responsible for Lloyd’s market development activities in the US, Canada and Latin America. From offices in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Frankfort KY, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Bogota, Mexico City, Miami and Rio de Janeiro, Lloyd’s is actively engaged in educational and marketing outreach to retail, wholesale and reinsurance intermediaries, risk managers, managing general agents, risk management programs at colleges & universities and other stakeholders in the Lloyd’s market. Hank has more than 35 years of experience in the insurance industry and has held a range of underwriting, client management and leadership positions in the United States and Europe at Chubb, Johnson & Higgins, Marsh and HRH. Hank received his BA from the University of California, Berkeley and has completed an executive leadership program at The Wharton School. He’s a member of the Board of Overseers at St. John’s University’s Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science and is on the boards of the Insurance Information Institute, Insurance Federation of New York and Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (NY/Northeast Division). With more than 58% of Lloyd’s global premium in 2019, the Americas region is Lloyd’s largest market. In addition to market development, Lloyd’s colleagues in the Americas provide media relations and regulatory support to the London-based managing agents / syndicates and operational oversight of the licensed platforms in Illinois, Kentucky, the USVI and our Lineage system in Montreal.
