The only thing that has been consistent about 2010/2021 has been change. Making the job of determining premiums for captives around the world immensely challenging. This session will focus on the impacts of COVID-19 on two captives in different industries (transportation and senior care) and how their actuary navigated the turbulent waters of 2020/2021. In particular, the changes in exposures, claim settlement patterns and that ever so important ingredient, risk management and actuarial intuition.

Jarod Proto

Jarod Proto is the Chief Risk Officer of Graph Insurance Group, a Risk Retention Group, LLC; a Vermont domiciled RRG that provides insurance and risk management solutions to 200+ skilled nursing facilities nationwide. After nearly 20 years in healthcare related industries, Mr. Proto has developed extensive experience in insurance program management, medical and professional liability claims and litigation, cross-discipline data reporting (actuarial/brokerage/underwriting/tax), indemnity and expense reserving, and claim negotiation and resolution. Prior to joining The Graph Group, Mr. Proto served as client counsel for Western Litigation, Inc., a subsidiary of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., Inc. He has also held positions in the healthcare liability division of Allied World Assurance Company, Ltd., and as a commercial litigation attorney where he represented healthcare organizations in all phases of complex litigation and appeals in state and federal courts. Mr. Proto received a B.S. in management and finance from North Carolina State University and his Juris Doctor from Quinnipiac University School of Law.

Dennis E. Silvia, CPCU

Dennis Silvia has over 30 years of experience in the insurance and captive insurance marketplace. He recently sold Cedar Consulting LLC and is now an Executive Vice President for the buyer, Davies Captive Managers. Davies is a global captive and insurance services provider. Dennis holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter and Accredited Advisor in Insurance designations and has a Master of Arts degree in Management from Regent University completing his thesis project on Alternative Insurance Programs. His consulting practice focuses on the integration of alternative risk program structures to assist in reaching enterprise-wide risk management goals.

Robert J. Walling, III, MAAA, FCAS, CERA

Robert Walling is a principal and consulting actuary with Pinnacle Actuarial Resources, Inc. and has been in the insurance industry since 1989. He is primarily focused on actuarial studies for captives and self-insureds, including regulatory and litigation support. He also performs commercial lines ratemaking and reserving studies, as well as legislative costing. Mr. Walling has been named one of Captive Review’s Captive Power 50 for the last four years. He has served on the CAS Board of Directors, the Casualty Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board, and numerous CAS and AAA committees, three of them as chairperson. He is a faculty member of the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE). Mr. Walling is a frequent speaker at industry meetings on a wide array of topics.
